In
2001 Aish was approached by NG Sperry Marine to quote for the
design and manufacture of the Operator Consoles for the Platform
Management System for the T45 Destroyer. After several visits
to our facility in Poole, NG Sperry were convinced
of our pedigree within the Naval environment and our ability
to carry out the required task. Our customer was experienced in platform management
systems on commercial vessels but had no previous history on
RN ships and specifically the harsh operating environment that
protection would be required to guard against.
The system required was to be self-contained so that our customer
had only to install the consoles on board ship and then load
their software operating system. There were to be two basic types
of console, a dual screen (side by side) and single screen (with
remotely mounted screen). Aish engineers decided that a “building
block system” should be adopted as the method of achieving
the design, hence the name “Morpheus”. This was to
consist of a standalone Processor Crate, Flat Panel displays
and input devices. All these items would be environmentally proven
individually, the idea being that any style of carcass could be
used to mount the equipment and theoretically meet the
environmental requirements.
Aish were successful in their bid and received an order for
six ship sets of equipment in 2002. Subsequently after design
reviews, prototyping and testing, ship set production commenced.
What has evolved is technically an excellent console set
and a very satisfied customer.
